Green-Spored Lepiota - Chlorophyllum molybdites - The Vomitus Mushroom - NOT EDIBLE

Its got a green spore print, Loves to grow in parks, gardens and mulch. At full maturity, the false parasol looks like a big dinner plate. Do not eat

Where does it appear?

The false parasol mushroom grows across North America, with the exception of the Pacific Northwest. It is more common on the east coast, east of the Rocky Mountains, and in one western state, California. It loves suburban areas, where lawns are mowed, mulch laid and lots of water added. Open pastures and rolling meadows are prime favorites for this nasty suprise to inhabitat.

The primary season for false parasols is late summer into fall, after heavy rains. However, it will appear from April through November in warmer climates like Florida or the Southwest.

How can you tell it is a Vomitus Mushroom?

False parasols often grow in substantial scattered groupings or fairy rings. This mushroom will also grow singularly or widely spaced. It is adaptive, a trait that allows it to spread much more widely than its original habitat. The adult mushroom can grow as big as a dinner plate, at that point the spore color under the cap will be turning green and it will be easier to tell it apart from other mushrooms.

It is when it is young that there is the most confusion. My advice is to steer clear of this and its edible look alikes until you feel confident in what you are doing as a forager.

FUN FACT: The one and only time I was ever poisoned by mushrooms was at the beginning of my foraging adventures where I had unwittingly introduced a False Parasol to a group of similar looking edible mushrooms in my foraging bag. Even though I realized my mistake and removed it, I was still crippled with vomiting and "the other end" for 4 hours straight later on that night. My glass half full  mantre made me see it as a quick track way to awesome abs..but it was definatly a lesson learned the hard way. If in doubt, throw it out, if it has mixed with other mushrooms, throw them all out.
