Melanie was born in the Cotswolds in England. She finally settled age 30, in Brooklyn, New York. Her home for 24 years was but after the onset of Covid she decided to move out of the city and into the beauty, freedom and wilderness of the 6 million acre Adirondack State Park in Northern New York State. She now lives off grid, has her own 600ft drilled well, solar power & lithium batteries for electricity and a propane powered back up generator for wintery days. Heating is wonderfully provided by a wood burning stove. There are all the amenities of a normal home without being tied to the grid.
For as long as Melanie could remember she has always been completely fascinated about all things to do with foraging, history and wilderness survival.
In 2022 Melanie created WILD FOODS, She feels it was important to help people identify and learn about the edible plants, rhizomes, berries, nuts, lichens, mushrooms and cambium that their ancestors successfully lived on in the centuries before us. This year Melanie is taking it a step further by sourcing small batches of heirloom seeds and bulbs so people can grow their own edible gardens.
"Teaching History through Living History" is a huge passion of Melanies and it led her to create an immersive 18 Century history program called THUNDERHAWK LIVING HISTORY SCHOOL, so named because Thunderhawk has always been what her family calls the mountain that they live on. Thunderhawk Living History School teaches what life was like for people of all backgrounds and countries in the lands that became New ork State. Her school has been invited to teach at local schools, at universities and colleges, in museums and in the Adirondack Lodges.
At home at Thunderhawk there are also 2 crazy dogs, a remuda horse and a bunch of chickens, ducks and pheasants. With her eyes and heart firmly focused on trying to live as cleanly and chemical free as possible, cows look to be added soon.
"Life off the grid is hard work but I wouldn't change it for the world, living in the mountains in nature is where I belong"
When Melanie is out in nature, she looks at her surroundings and sees their abundance.
Melanie strongly believes that wild nutrition should be promoted to both young and old as a real source of mainstream healthy food.
Her passion leads her to spend as much time teaching in person or online through her social media all that she knows about foraging, cooking and identifying wild foods. She and Brian love to reach out and share their knowledge.
